The Wongs: The Chungking Restaurant

The Chungking Restaurant, on Market Street in the downtown area, was the main Chinese restaurant in Riverside from the early 1940s until 1974. It was owned and run by Voy and Fay Wong.

Voy Wong was one of the last emigrants from Gom Benn Village to Riverside, as described in a narrative by Janlee Wong, one of their sons.

Click here a tour of the Chungking Restaurant and the Wong family. The pictures are all from the Wong family scrapbooks, shared by Linda Huang, one of Voy and Fay Wong's daughters.

Linda Huang shares two essays she wrote about her family. Click here for memories about her grandmother (Voy Wong's mother) and family preparations for Chinese New Year in Riverside.

Fay Hing Lee Wong and her children donated the family's Riverside home to UCR in 2000. With the proceeds from the sale, Fay created the Voy and Fay Wong Endowment in Asian Art that supports the Visual Resource Collection in the Department of the History of Art. This fund will establish a designated workstation in the new Fine Arts building area devoted to the study of Asian Art. The Wong family has its own website at www.riversidewongs.net.
